Wednesday afternoon, Earlville Library was abuzz with the energetic enthusiasm of young coders during our Jimu Destruction Workshop. As part of the monthly coding club series, every second Wednesday at 3:30pm, we introduce kids to the captivating world of coding. This workshop saw our young participants learning procedural block-based coding to program Jimu robots, aimed at tactically dismantling a mock city set up in the library.
Block-based coding is a beginner-friendly approach to introduce youngsters to programming. Through visually organizing blocks of code, the kids quickly grasped fundamental coding concepts. The Jimu Destruction Workshop offered a hands-on learning experience, where coding wasn’t just an abstract concept but a tool for achieving a tangible and fun objective—maneuvering robots to “destroy” a mock city.
The teamwork and problem-solving skills the kids employed were inspiring. Working in groups, they strategized, coded, and tested their robots, learning from each misstep and celebrating each triumph. They experienced first-hand the power of coding in bringing their imaginative scenarios to life.
Moreover, the workshop highlighted the importance of logical thinking and precise instruction-giving in coding. The exercise of instructing robots to navigate and interact with the mock city effectively demonstrated how a well-coded program can yield desired outcomes.
The coding club at Earlville Library continues to be a source of learning and fun, making the educational journey in coding and robotics engaging and accessible to the young minds in our community. Join us for the next workshop to delve further into the endless possibilities that coding and robotics present.
