Rune Lock Machine

Rune Lock Machine

How can simple mechanical parts be combined to create a lock that only opens with the correct code?

In this hands-on workshop, students will design and build a lockable cardboard box featuring their own mechanical rune lock. Using simple materials, they'll construct a locking mechanism that requires a secret combination to open, creating a secure place to store their small treasures and valuables.

As they build, students will explore how mechanical systems use moving parts to control access, while developing an understanding of sequencing, precision, and design. They'll test and refine their locking mechanisms, troubleshoot problems, and improve their designs to create a reliable and easy-to-use lock.

This workshop combines engineering, creativity, and problem solving in an engaging challenge that introduces students to the principles of mechanical design and secure systems.

Learning Outcomes

  • Engineering and mechanisms
Explore how simple mechanical systems and moving parts can be combined to create a functional locking mechanism.

  • Design and construction
Build a working cardboard lock box while developing precision, planning, and construction skills.

  • Problem solving and iteration
Test, troubleshoot, and refine lock designs to improve reliability and functionality.

  • Creativity and logical thinking
Design a unique secret combination and personalise the box while applying logical sequencing to the locking system.
